Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to investigate BIM (to five dimensions) and evaluate its usefulness for the building and construction industry.
This knowledge-based unit of competency is applied by new entrants to non-trade roles in the building and construction industry who are required to know about BIM - features, dimensions and data requirements, how it can be applied within building and construction projects and its benefits and limitations.
The unit does not require the use of BIM software.
No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Research Business Information Modelling (BIM) as a tool for the building and construction industry
- 1.30 Identify the basic concept and features of Business Information Modelling (BIM)
- 1.31 Identify the main software applications under the BIM umbrella and the different functions they support
- 1.32 Determine the phases of construction where BIM may be used and the features of BIM that relate to each phase
- 1.33 Identify the significance of the four levels of BIM and how organisations determine the level they will use
- 1.34 Determine the focus of the first four dimensions within BIM – 2D through to 5D
- 1.35 Identify perceived legal obstacles to successful adoption of BIM and any legal issues and risks associated with BIM
Investigate the uses of BIM across the building and construction industry in Australia and other countries
- 2.18 Research and report on examples of BIM projects in Australia
- 2.19 Compare BIM usage in the Australian private sector with government projects in building and construction including the phases of construction where BIM is used
- 2.20 Identify states and territories that have developed guidelines on BIM and the focus or coverage and status of these guidelines
- 2.21 Identify countries leading the adoption of BIM in construction projects and the role of governments in the degree of uptake across their construction industries

- 4.25 Determine the reasons for the rate of uptake of BIM to manage building and construction projects in Australia and the phases of construction where it is typically used
- 4.26 Identify the benefits of using BIM according to BIM software vendors and compare with the benefits reported by BIM users
- 4.27 Determine the limitations or challenges with BIM and how these affected users considering BIM, or were addressed by users already committed to a BIM process
- 4.28 Identify any learnings from BIM usage in other countries and how these might apply in Australia
