Description

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to maintain the safety of children in early childhood workplaces, including responding to emergency situations.

The unit of competency is applied by educators who are responsible for checking the safety of environments, toys and equipment, supervising children and supporting them to learn safe practices.

Elements and Performance Criteria

1 Provide a safe physical environment for children

1.1 Inspect the indoor and outdoor environment for hazards prior to children using these areas
1.2 Document identified hazards and the associated level of risk in accordance with workplace procedure
1.3 Select and apply strategies to control the risk in accordance with the Hierarchy of Control
1.4 Accurately complete workplace documentation for hazard identification and risk control
1.5 Select toys and equipment that are safe for the children who will be using them
1.6 Store hazardous products in a location that is inaccessible to children

2 Supervise children during, play, routines and transitions

2.1 Collaborate with colleagues to ensure that supervision occurs in accordance with legislative and workplace requirements
2.2 Scan the physical environment to identify the location of each child and other educators
2.3 Position self where the maximum number of children can be seen
2.4 Use supervision as an opportunity to interact with children
2.5 Investigate unusual noises, cries and silence
2.6 Increase the level of supervision for activities that involve challenge and risk

3 Ensure safety of self and others in an emergency situation

3.1 Raise the alarm and commence workplace emergency evacuation in accordance with workplace procedure and legislative requirements when an emergency is identified
3.2 Escort children to designated evacuation area quickly and calmly in accordance with workplace procedures and legislative requirements
3.3 Use strategies to calm and reassure children during the evacuation
3.4 Confirm that all children are accounted for at the evacuation area
3.5 Comfort children who are distressed and treat injuries once children are separated from the threat or danger
3.6 Contact emergency services and families to advise them of the situation in accordance with workplace procedure and legislative requirements
3.7 Document and report details of the emergency in accordance with workplace procedure and legislative requirements
3.8 Plan strategies to provide post-incident support to children in accordance with workplace procedure and legislative requirements

4 Provide experiences to support children’s awareness of safety

4.1 Explain and implement rules for safe play with children
4.2 Discuss risks associated with the weather with children and implement strategies to reduce this risk
4.3 Discuss and practise emergency and evacuation procedures with children
4.4 Explain and practise strategies with children for safe travel in cars, buses and when walking
