Description
To enable students to communicate appropriately and
effectively in English and the LOTE (Language Other
Than English), both orally and in writing, in the
area of administration.
To provide students with an understanding of
administration in a specific and general context in
Australia and in a country where the LOTE is spoken.
To enable students to extract and impart relevant
information from a variety of sources related to
administration.
To familiarise students with specific vocabulary relevant to the field of
administration.

1 Write a letter to a person in the LOTE country who is going to settle
in Australia briefly explaining the three levels of
Government. 10%
2 Research your own local council and present an oral report to the
class with diagrams, visual aids, etc. (5
mins). 20%
3 Obtain literature/pamphlets from three organisations and summarise in
writing in the LOTE (3 X 100 words) the main functions of each one. Examples
of organisations are:
- CSIRO
- Department of Veterans' Affairs
- Taxation Office
- Agriculture Protection Board
4 Role-play a telephone conversation on behalf of a Taxation Department
official with a LOTE- speaking person, answering queries regarding the annual
tax return. 10%
5 Role-play a conversation first on behalf of the counter clerk then on
behalf of the client who wishes to apply for an Australian
passport. 10%
6 Draw up a chart showing the major Public Service Departments in
Australia and in a country where the LOTE is spoken. 5%
7 Demonstrate a knowledge of meeting procedures by participation in a
meeting:
Either to discuss the role of the
Migrant Resource Centre or to protest
against a proposed change to the local
environment. 20%
8 Draw up a brief 'dictionary' of the most important acronyms in
Australia. 15%
CRITERIA FOR ASSESSMENT
Successful communication is the focus of all
assessment. In assessing the communicative skills of the student, the
following criteria (subject to language-specific needs) may assist in
determining the level of student performance:
- clarity of expression
- command of topic-specific vocabulary
- appropriateness of language
- fluency
- structural accuracy
- knowledge of subject matter
- accuracy of information.
