Description
To provide an introduction to Geology, by means of a practical module in
elementary mineralogy, petrology, structure and mapping.

A pass mark of 65% must be obtained on each of the following four assessment
groups:
- 40% at least four practical tests, in which properties are
determined or described and identifications are made of fresh hand specimens,
using identification keys
Included should be tests on:
- minerals
- igneous rocks
- sedimentary rocks
- metamorphic rocks
- a combination of rock and mineral types
Each test should contain a minimum of three samples, which are to be fully
described and identified, with a time limit of about ten minutes per sample, or
more samples if only part of the description is required. The samples are to
be selected from types which have been studied according to this module.
- 10% laboratory exercises
Learners must pass, in aggregate, assessment of exercises completed in the
laboratory and outside scheduled laboratory time. Marks are to be assigned for
correctness, completeness, organisation and neatness.
- 20% field trip post tests and maps produced on field trips
Learners are required to do a minimum of 17 hours of field work, preferably on
three separate days. At least one day is to involve tape and compass mapping
with the production of a geological map and report. The remaining two days may
be conducted excursions, involving activities such as the completion of field
sheets or questionnaires.
Learners must pass, in aggregate, post tests and assessment of maps produced
during field trips.
Post trip tests are to consist of questions based on module material as seen on
the field trips. The questions may be multiple choice, single word, sentence
or paragraph answer. Completion or labelling of diagrams or maps may also be
used.
- 30% final written test covering all material in the module.
Learners must pass a written theory test consisting of multiple choice, short
answer and paragraph answers on a selection of competencies outlined in this
module. It is suggested that an adequate coverage of this material would
require a theory test of between 1½ and 3 hours.
