Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to introduce children to the global community and their rights and responsibilities within it.

The unit of competency is applied by educators who work within a social justice framework to inform children about the social, cultural and environmental diversity that exists in the global community and ways to nurture and preserve this diversity.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Promote civic responsibility
  • 1.1 Structure experiences, play spaces and equipment in a way that promotes interaction, co-operation and problem solving
  • 1.2 Engage with children to identify the communities to which they belong
  • 1.3 Collaborate with children to identify expectations for positive and respectful community participation
  • 1.4 Plan discussions for children to investigate and exchange views about issues that are important to them in their communities
  • 1.5 Listen to children’s views and opinions and act on these
  • 1.6 Support children to develop strategies that contribute to change and make a difference within their communities
2 Facilitate exploration of the diversity of the global community
  • 2.1 Support children to investigate similarities and differences between their lives and the lives of other children in the world
  • 2.2 Provide experiences and resources for children to explore diversity of culture, heritage, background and traditions
  • 2.3 Observe celebrations and commemorations that recognise diversity
  • 2.4 Provide experiences for children to explore the connections between their local community and the global community
3 Promote the principles of social justice and equity
  • 3.1 Use experiences and interactions to support children to explore their individual differences in a positive way
  • 3.2 Use inclusive language and practices to show differences as beneficial, not as inferior or a problem
  • 3.3 Talk to children about their rights and the rights of others
  • 3.4 Use experiences and interactions to support children to identify fair and unfair behaviour
  • 3.5 Facilitate discussions with children to investigate ideas that promote equity in response to unfair behaviour
4 Provide information from the media that promotes children’s well-being and participation
  • 4.1 Use a range of mediums to provide information to children in language that is accessible to them
  • 4.2 Gather information from local and international sources
  • 4.3 Preview information to ensure it promotes cultural diversity and is not harmful to children’s wellbeing
