Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to identify own support needs for mentoring Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and access relevant support systems.
It requires the ability to identify own needs and access available support.
The unit applies to prospective mentors who will be working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.
The use of the word Aboriginal throughout this document refers to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. In this unit the term Aboriginal is used in keeping with the current policy of the NSW Government and the NSW Aboriginal Education Consultative Group Incorporated. Indigenous Australians is the collective term used by the Commonwealth Government to refer to Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islander people. Educators need to confirm what terminology is accepted by local communities and must demonstrate sensitivity to Aboriginal issues and cultures.
This unit recognises that there is no single Aboriginal Culture and that Aboriginal individuals and communities are diverse. Protocols must therefore be identified according to the local context.
No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
