Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to promote play in the areas of maths, technology and science, including the natural environment.

The unit of competency is applied by educators who use their understanding of child development to provide experiences, resources and environments that encourage children to investigate scientific, mathematical and technological concepts in their play, and promote an understanding of the natural environment.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Facilitate mathematical investigation within the indoor and outdoor play environments
  • 1.1 Provide a wide range of resources that have mathematical properties
  • 1.2 Arrange the resources in an interesting and aesthetically pleasing way
  • 1.3 Provide time for children to investigate resources and engage in mathematical processes
  • 1.4 Display examples of mathematical play or inventions born of maths
2 Encourage scientific experimentation within the indoor and outdoor play environments
  • 2.1 Provide a wide range of resources that give children the opportunity to experiment with scientific concepts
  • 2.2 Role model experimentation during play
  • 2.3 Research famous scientists and scientific experiments with children
  • 2.4 Display examples of scientific endeavour within the environment
  • 2.5 Discuss the importance of safety with children when they are experimenting
  • 2.6 Use descriptive words with children to expand their vocabulary
3 Promote the natural environment
  • 3.1 Provide opportunities for exploration of the fauna in the local area and compare to other areas of the community, country or world
  • 3.2 Discuss the beauty of various landscapes with children
  • 3.3 Discuss the importance of maintaining a healthy natural environment with children
  • 3.4 Provide opportunities for children to learn about lifecycles
  • 3.5 Provide literature about caring for flora and fauna
4 Foster curiosity in using technology during play
  • 4.1 Provide technological resources within the indoor and outdoor environment
  • 4.2 Embed technological resources in play experiences
  • 4.3 Discuss responsible use of technology with children
