Description
This unit specifies the essential outcomes for selecting wiring systems and cables for low voltage electrical installations to ensure they are compliant and performance criteria by which competency is to be assessed.

This unit is for holders of Offshore Technical Skills Record (OTSR) or Australian Technical Competencies Statement (ATCS) issued by an RTO and incorporated the minimum context gap to meet Australian standards and regulations.

This unit shall only be undertaken by holders of an OTSR or ATCS for the following qualification or successor of the following qualification:
- UEE30820 Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician

Entrants must hold a provisional/restricted licence issued by the Australian state or territory regulatory authority responsible for regulating electrical work and the licensing of workers.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to select wiring systems and cables for electrical installations
  • 1.1 The extent and nature of the electrical installation is determined from job specifications, equipment schedules and drawings
  • 1.2 Requirements of the Wiring Rules (AS/NZS 3000) for selecting cable conductor size based on current-carrying capacity and voltage and earth fault-loop impedance limitations and method provided in Electrical installations—Selection of cables (AS/NZS 3008) are reviewed
  • 1.3 Knowledge of conditions where short-circuit performance may be a factor in cable selection is reviewed
  • 1.4 Requirements of the Wiring Rules (AS/NZS 3000) for the provision of cables to be protected from external influences and fire and mechanical protection is reviewed
  • 1.5 Manufacturers information on cable insulation characteristics and wiring system components for protection of cables from external influences, fire and mechanical damage are reviewed
  • 1.6 Wiring Rules (AS/NZS 3000), and local requirements for the application and selection of aerial, catenary and underground wiring systems are reviewed
  • 1.7 Cable routes, the route lengths of cables and the conditions in which the wiring system is to operate is determined from job specifications, equipment schedules and electrical equipment location drawings and checked for compliance
  • 1.8 Load requirements for individual current-using equipment are determined from the design brief or from job specifications, equipment schedules and drawings
  • 1.9 Methods specified in the Wiring Rules (AS/NZS 3000) for determining maximum demand in consumer’s mains; submains and final subcircuits are reviewed
2. Select wiring systems and cables for electrical installations
  • 2.1 Maximum demand in consumers mains, submains and final subcircuits are determined by calculation
  • 2.2 Types of cable and methods for cable protection and support are selected to meet the environment in which they are to be installed with consideration for grouping or spacing of cables (AS/NZS 3008) and recommended space factor in enclosures (AS/NZS 3000)
  • 2.3 Cable conductor sizes are selected to meet current-carrying capacity requirements and voltage-drop limitations using methods given in Electrical installations—Selection of cables (AS/NZS 3008) and earth fault-loop impedance limitations from methods given in the Wiring Rules (AS/NZS 3000)
  • 2.4 Rated tripping current of the proposed circuit protective devices are checked for co-ordination with current-carrying capacity of the circuit conductors
  • 2.5 Size of protective earthing conductors and the main earthing conductor and type and size of earth electrode are selected in accordance with the requirements of the Wiring Rules (AS/NZS 3000)
  • 2.6 Equipotential bonding arrangements as required by the Wiring Rules (AS/NZS 3000) are determined from job specifications, equipment schedules and drawings
3. Document electrical installation
  • 3.1 Cable and wiring system components selected are documented in a cable schedule giving cable types, conductor sizes, routes and route lengths, wiring system components and reasons for the selections made including any calculations
  • 3.2 Evidence is obtained from manufacturers/suppliers that cables and wiring system components selected comply with safety requirements and included in the documentation
  • 3.3 Documentation is forwarded to an authorised person for acceptance
