Description

Rationale: A flexible qualification at AQF Level5 not specifically aligned with regulated maritime occupations but which includes competency in maritime safety, survival and emergency skills as well as other skills needed to fulfil support roles on various types of vessels.

Successful completion will require competency in units that relate to work defined as aligned at AQF Level5:
'The self-directed application of knowledge and skills, with substantial depth in some areas where judgement is required in planning and selecting appropriate equipment, services and techniques for self and others. Applications involve participation in development of strategic initiatives, as well as personal responsibility and autonomy in performing complex technical operations or organising others. It may include participation in teams including teams concerned with planning and evaluation functions. Group or team coordination and management may be involved.'

Requirements for completion of the qualification:
A successful outcome of twenty-three units of competency which must include:
- the seven mandatory units listed, plus
- at least sixteen additional units (at least seven of which must be aligned at AQF Level 5) to specific additional maritime employment needs beyond the minimum mandatory requirements.
