Description
This unit of competency has been developed for post trade engineering fabrication training and the recognition of post trade skills in applying welding principles to welding that is generally associated with the application of one of the MEM Manufacturing and Engineering Training Package units satisfying AS 1796 Certification of welders and welding supervisors, or equivalent.It defines the skills and knowledge required to review job specifications requiring coded welding and plan for the welding preparation, sequencing and set up of welds required to satisfy AS 1796 Certification of welders and welding supervisors. The unit includes knowledge of welding terms, codes and symbols and set up requirements for a range of materials and processes as defined in the unit in conjunction with its prerequisites.Where metallurgical skills and knowledge to support coded welding, welding supervision, or welding inspection are required, the unit MEM05061 Apply basic metallurgy principles to welding applications must be selected.This unit must be selected in combination with one of the units satisfying the AS 1796 Certification of welders and welding supervisors or equivalent. 1. Determine job requirements
- 1.1 Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- 1.2 Comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times
- 1.3 Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with SOPs
- 1.4 Identify welding and testing requirements from specifications, drawings, job sheets or work instructions
- 1.5 Interpret welding terms and symbols correctly
2. Plan the logical sequence of welding operations
- 2.1 Apply regulatory and safety requirements to welding task planning
- 2.2 Apply principles of planning and setting up welding to welding task
- 2.3 Plan preparation of welds for testing in accordance with SOPs
- 2.4 Plan processes required to support welding task
- 2.5 Plan post welding requirements including visual inspection, dimensional checks, and sampling in accordance with SOPs
