Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes required to apply masking materials in preparation for vehicle and component refinishing. It involves preparing for the task, selecting and using tools and equipment, selecting masking materials appropriate to the vehicle or component, masking off surrounding panels and components before refinishing activities, and completing workplace processes and documentation.It applies to those working in the automotive paint refinishing repair industry.No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to mask vehicle panels and components
- 1.1 Job requirements are determined from workplace instructions
- 1.2 Masking materials and methods are selected according to workplace instructions
- 1.3 Hazards associated with the work are identified and risks are managed
- 1.4 Masking tools and equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) are identified and checked for serviceability
- 1.5 Work is planned to minimise waste and use time efficiently
2. Carry out masking activities
- 2.1 Vehicle surfaces and components that require masking are identified, cleaned or removed
- 2.2 Masking activities are carried out according to workplace procedures and safety and environmental requirements, and without causing damage to vehicle surfaces and components
3. Complete work processes
- 3.1 Final inspection is made to ensure work is to workplace expectations and component is presented ready for use
- 3.2 Work area is cleaned, waste and non-recyclable materials are disposed of, and recyclable material is collected
- 3.3 Tools and equipment are checked and stored according to workplace procedures
- 3.4 Workplace documentation is processed according to workplace procedures
