This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to contribute to the control of emergencies and critical situations in Drilling.No licensing, legislation or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for the control of emergencies and critical situations
  • 1.1 Access, interpret and apply control of drilling emergencies and critical situations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
  • 1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
  • 1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures
  • 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
  • 1.5 Communicate and coordinate activities with others prior to, during and on completion of the work activity
  • 1.6 Identify, establish and maintain communication systems with other personnel during the drilling emergency
2. Contribute to the control of critical situations
  • 2.1 Identify and maintain safe working practices
  • 2.2 Interpret/apply national standards and code of practice for manual handling
  • 2.3 Identify and initiate actions in response to developing, emerging and existing critical situations
  • 2.4 Activate relevant alarms
  • 2.5 Identify, interpret and apply processes and systems to quickly and competently close the well
  • 2.6 Identify, interpret and apply well kick signs
  • 2.7 Locate full opening safety valve, blow out prevention (BOP) and flow control head
  • 2.8 Provide assistance in the application of First Aid and medivac procedures
  • 2.9 Monitor the situation and initiate actions to minimise risks to personnel, environment, process, plant, tools and equipment
  • 2.10 Maintain verbal and written reporting requirements of critical situations
  • 2.11 Participate in debriefs and complete written records/documentation
3. Respond to emergencies in other areas
  • 3.1 Identify and maintain safe working practices
  • 3.2 Identify and initiate actions in response to developing, emerging and existing critical situations
  • 3.3 Activate relevant alarms
  • 3.4 Provide clear, concise and accurate information in relation to the emergency
  • 3.5 Adhere to authorised emergency procedures
  • 3.6 Monitor the situation and initiate actions to minimise risks to personnel, environment, process, plant, tools and equipment
  • 3.7 Participate in debriefs and complete written records/documentation
4. Comply with rig safety procedures
  • 4.1 Identify, interpret, confirm and apply signals and maintain safe working procedures for operation of manriding winch
  • 4.2 Obtain lift authorisation from relevant personnel
  • 4.3 Inspect man riding harness and hoist, record and report any faults
  • 4.4 Apply manual handling techniques when lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying or restraining objects
  • 4.5 Set and pull manual slips
  • 4.6 Operate make-up and break-out manual tongs
  • 4.7 Move drill floor drilling tools and equipment
  • 4.8 Read, interpret and apply isolation and tagging procedures
  • 4.9 Read, interpret and apply permit to work system
  • 4.10 Attend and participate in pit emergency drills and safety meetings
5. Participate in fire drills
  • 5.1 Recognise and comply with fire alarm signals
  • 5.2 Operate portable extinguishing equipment, fire hose and nozzles
  • 5.3 Identify and comply with fire team instructions
  • 5.4 Identify assigned fire/boat station and follow procedures
