Description
This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to plan, prepare, set out and install or repair internal timber flooring directly to joists and over sheet sub-floors and external decking to joists in domestic and commercial settings. There are no specific licensing requirements directly associated with this unit, however, some jurisdictions require the holder of this unit to be licensed or certified and users should check with the relevant authorities. On-site work may require certification of general induction training covered by the National Code of Practice for Induction for Construction Work (ASCC 2007).

1 Determine job requirements
- 1.1 Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- 1.2 Comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times
- 1.3 Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with SOPs
- 1.4 Identify job requirements from plans, specifications, drawings, quality requirements and operational details
2 Plan and prepare for work
- 2.1 Identify and implement signage/barricade requirements
- 2.2 Carry out service on selected plant, tools and equipment, including identifying and rectifying any faults, to manufacturer requirements to ensure they perform at their optimum
- 2.3 Calculate material quantity requirements in accordance with plans and specifications
- 2.4 Identify and obtain materials appropriate to the work application ensuring they are prepared, safely handled and located ready for use
- 2.5 Identify and apply environmental protection requirements for the project in accordance with environmental plans and regulatory obligations
3 Set out
- 3.1 Inspect sub-floor and joists for flatness and structural integrity and correct as required
- 3.2 Set out and plan installation method
- 3.3 Prepare materials in accordance with client specifications
4 Install timber flooring
- 4.1 Select appropriate flooring materials for the intended use according to specifications
- 4.2 Confirm floor measurements and flooring materials to ensure minimum waste and prepare for installation
- 4.3 Install flooring, as specified by the client, using suppliers recommended products ensuring product is installed and secured to manufacturer recommendations, industry and Australian Standards
- 4.4 Complete installed flooring in preparation for sanding and finishing
5 Complete housekeeping
- 5.1 Clear work area and dispose of materials for re-use or recycle in accordance with legislation/regulations/codes of practice and job specifications
- 5.2 Clean, check and maintain plant, tools and equipment in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and SOPs
- 5.3 Complete workplace documentation in accordance with procedures
