Description
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to coordinate enclosure or exhibit operations, including supervising staff and managing animal care. It includes contributing to enclosure or exhibit refurbishment or renovation projects.This unit applies to senior team members with zoo keeping, wildlife care, aquarium or related experience who generally supervise others and provide and communicate solutions to a range of predictable and unpredictable problems. Tasks may vary in scale from individual animal welfare to social group management, working across a range of programs and/or animal groups in the facility’s collection.All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures according to Commonwealth and state/territory health and safety and animal welfare regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Supervise enclosure or exhibit staff
- 1.1 Identify personnel, material and equipment required to manage and maintain the enclosure or exhibit
- 1.2 Develop and coordinate rosters to balance job requirements, responsibility levels and skill development opportunities
- 1.3 Recruit staff as required and conduct enclosure or exhibit induction
- 1.4 Communicate enclosure or exhibit operational procedures and enforce safe work practices for all staff
- 1.5 Review work operations and improve operational efficiency
- 1.6 Identify staff skills and knowledge gaps and arrange training according to facility policy
2. Supervise animal care and housing operations
- 2.1 Assess and evaluate animal care strategies in consultation with carers, keepers and other relevant staff members
- 2.2 Monitor enclosure or exhibit security and safety and animal care and welfare requirements
- 2.3 Initiate urgent works and schedule routine activities
- 2.4 Implement environmentally safe pest control procedures according to facility procedures
- 2.5 Monitor animal care and operations within the enclosure or exhibit
- 2.6 Update enclosure or exhibit procedures and records according to facility requirements
3. Contribute to enclosure and exhibit refurbishment or renovation projects
- 3.1 Assess current enclosure or exhibit performance in relation to security, safety and animal welfare in consultation with team members
- 3.2 Research options to address identified needs of enclosure or exhibit
- 3.3 Identify facility strategic plans and policies and assess factors that may impact on commissioning of new work in enclosures or exhibits
- 3.4 Review and prioritise refurbishment or renovation options for enclosure or exhibit
- 3.5 Present findings to project team and/or management and incorporate feedback
