Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to develop low risk heavy vehicle driving behaviours in others. It includes demonstrating applicable low risk heavy vehicle driving rules, regulations and strategies to drivers, delivering training on low risk heavy vehicle driving principles and monitoring and maintaining low risk heavy vehicle driving behaviours of drivers. It also includes evaluating drivers on their low risk heavy vehicle driving competence, reviewing evaluation of driver low risk heavy vehicle driving competence dealing with behavioural barriers to learning, developing heavy vehicle operation and control skills, and interpreting and applying regulatory requirements and road law expertise.It also includes developing higher-order cognitive and technical skills, such as hazard perception, correctly reading a driving environment and responding appropriately, exercising risk management strategies that contribute to low risk heavy vehicle driving behaviours, and meeting community expectations.This unit applies to heavy vehicle driving trainers.Work is performed without supervision. Developing low risk heavy vehicle driving behaviours in others involves the application of learning principles of different cohorts, instructional methods, training competence and experience, higher-order heavy vehicle driver expertise, navigation skills, road law expertise, routine procedures and regulatory requirements across a range of operational situations and a variety of driving contexts.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Demonstrate applicable low risk heavy vehicle driving rules and regulations to drivers
  • 1.1 Work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) regulatory requirements are identified, documented and communicated
  • 1.2 Current and relevant road rules and heavy vehicle national law or applicable state/territory law and regulations are identified, interpreted and communicated
  • 1.3 Road rules are explained and demonstrated to heavy vehicle driver in a low risk manner
2 Demonstrate lowrisk heavy vehicle driving strategies to drivers
  • 2.1 Pre- and post-operational inspections and checks or vehicle/trailer brake systems, suspension, axles, electrical systems, wheels and tyres, and couplings are demonstrated in accordance with national road safety standards, as required
  • 2.2 Low risk driving techniques that keep heavy vehicle driver at a low risk level are demonstrated
  • 2.3 Low risk driving behaviours are demonstrated consistently
  • 2.4 Heavy vehicle operation and control skills and knowledge to minimise risks are explained and demonstrated to heavy vehicle driver
  • 2.5 Load placement and load restraints are explained and demonstrated to heavy vehicle driver
  • 2.6 Load is confirmed as correctly class labelled in accordance with the current Australian Dangerous Goods (ADG) Code
3 Deliver training on low risk heavy vehicle driving principles
  • 3.1 Training objectives and methods are planned, documented and communicated in accordance with lesson plan
  • 3.2 Training is conducted in a low risk and accessible environment
  • 3.3 Specific needs for training are identified and confirmed through observation and evaluation of heavy vehicle driver capability
  • 3.4 Information about low risk heavy vehicle driving principles is clearly communicated to driver
  • 3.5 Behaviour principles behind low risk driving is demonstrated and explained to heavy vehicle driver
  • 3.6 Driver is directed through task performance in rural and urban environments
4 Monitor and maintain low risk heavy vehicle driving behaviours of drivers
  • 4.1 Medium to high risk driving behaviours are identified and constructive feedback is provided to heavy vehicle driver
