Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to construct and install water distribution assets.It includes constructing and installing assets, pipes and associated fittings, confirming work quality and finalising work.This unit applies to those working as field and operational staff with responsibility for ensuring water distribution assets are constructed and installed in a safe and timely manner. Those undertaking this unit would work under appropriate supervision either independently or in a team using own familiar resources as required, while performing routine tasks in a range of familiar contexts, ensuring minimum damage to the environment.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Prepare for construction and installation
- 1.1 Determine work requirements for construction and installation from plans, specifications and instructions
- 1.2 Perform worksite checks to prevent damage to other utilities
- 1.3 Select and check equipment and tools required to meet safety and work requirements of task and worksite
- 1.4 Select, fit and use personal protective equipment (PPE)
- 1.5 Identify potential risks to public and environment, and take appropriate steps to minimise and eliminate risks
2 Construct and install distribution assets and associated fittings
- 2.1 Excavate and prepare trenches according to workplace procedures
- 2.2 Lay bedding or foundations according to workplace procedures
- 2.3 Inspect pipes and fittings, lay and joint
- 2.4 Install or place prefabricated components according to manufacturer instructions
- 2.5 Connect to existing water system according to industry standards and workplace procedures
- 2.6 Backfill excavations according to specifications
3 Confirm work qualityand finalise work
- 3.1 Check constructed and installed distribution assets, pipes and fittings to ensure specifications are met
- 3.2 Check water quality testing results to ensure organisational requirements are met
- 3.3 Check, maintain and store equipment, tools and materials according to workplace procedures
- 3.4 Restore worksite to meet environmental and workplace procedures
- 3.5 Complete workplace records and as constructed drawings and process
