Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to manage the installation and set-up of equipment and systems required to implement lighting designs for productions in the screen, media, entertainment and events industries. It involves organising lighting resources and supervising the installation process for lighting in live production environments.The unit applies to those who display a high level of initiative, judgement and responsibility as they plan, organise and manage resources needed to install lighting systems in venues. In some States and Territories of Australia, a restricted electrical licence is required to repair and maintain production equipment. Restricted electrical licences allow a person to carry out electrical work incidental to a trade. Incidental work may include fault-finding on equipment or changing like for like equipment by disconnecting and reconnecting the fixed wiring. It does not include any other changes to the fixed wiring.Testing and tagging of electrical equipment must be carried out by a person with the required certificate of competency in accordance with the performance specifications of:Australian Standard 3760: 200 In-service safety inspection and testing of electrical equipmentAustralian Standard 3002: 1985 Electrical installations - shows and carnivals. Users are advised to check with the relevant licensing authority for requirements.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan installation of lighting systems
- 1.1 Confirm lighting requirements in consultation with required personnel
- 1.2 Conduct site or venue inspections to identify issues to be incorporated into planning of lighting installation and operations
- 1.3 Plan lighting control systems according to requirements outlined in production documentation
- 1.4 Create a list of resources needed to develop lighting control systems that meet production requirements
- 1.5 Develop contingency plans to minimise impact of unexpected technical difficulties
- 1.6 Perform job safety analysis of tasks according to health and safety requirements
- 1.7 Develop and document a work plan for installing lighting systems according to requirements
2. Organise resources
- 2.1 Develop realistic expenditure estimates that conform to budget allocations
- 2.2 Obtain required resources according to organisational procedures
- 2.3 Identify and resolve potential budget overruns
- 2.4 Organise crew in line with industry award guidelines
- 2.5 Organise the services of licensed personnel as required
3. Supervise the installation process
- 3.1 Supervise the connection of control systems
- 3.2 Monitor progress of lighting system installation against work plans and implement contingency plans as required
- 3.3 Confirm all work activities comply with health and safety requirements
- 3.4 Test aspects of lighting system installation on a regular basis
- 3.5 Identify faults in lighting equipment and accessories
- 3.6 Review finished installation with required personnel and make adjustments as required
