Elements and Performance Criteria

This unit applies to recreational vehicle manufacturing. The following explanations identify how this unit may be applied in different workplaces and circumstances.This unit applies only where relevant State/Territory licensing requirements permit the installation of LP gas systems in a recreational vehicle. Licensing arrangements required by State/Territory and National authorities may vary.The unit requires the determination of requirements, the installation and commissioning of LP gas systems with an operating pressure not exceeding 2.75kPa in a recreational vehicle.

The definition of a recreational vehicle includes:
caravan
pop-top caravan
camper trailer
tent trailer
5 th wheeler
slide-on camper
campervan.

The manufacturing enterprise may include:
sole proprietor
sub-contractor
sub-contracting manufacturer
employer/manufacturer.

The LP gas system includes:
cylinder (one or two)
regulator
piping
appliances and fixings
air supply
ventilation.

Quality assurance requirements include:
International Standards Organisation
internal enterprise quality assurance policy and risk management strategy
Environment Protection Authority (EPA)
AS 5601-2000 (AG 601)
gas installations and AS/NZ 1596 - Storage and handling of LPG
site safety plans
enterprise operations and procedures.
Regulatory authorities may include statutory plumbing authority, statutory gas authority and the State/Territory or local statutory authority.

Tools and equipment may include:
hacksaws
power cutting/grinding tools
measuring equipment
wrenches, spanners
files
flaring tools
silver brazing equipment
testing equipment
lifting/load shifting equipment, including trolleys, rollers, forklifts, blocks, hoists and jacks.

Materials must comply with job specifications and appropriate standards for installation of LP gas systems and include:
gas operated appliances
gas regulators
gas cylinders
copper tubing
stainless steel
non-metallic hose assemblies
fitting/fixing materials.

OH&S requirements are to be in accordance with State/Territory legislation and regulations and include:
safe workshop environment/worksite work practices
safe use of tools and equipment
safe handling of materials
hazard control and hazardous materials and substances
use of personal protective equipment.

Personal protective equipment may include:
overalls
boots
hard hat/cap
safety glasses/goggles
gloves
ear plugs/muffs
face masks/respirators.

Clean-up procedures include:
cleaning working surfaces and areas
cleaning and storing all tools and equipment
disposing of waste materials correctly.

Sources of information including the appropriate standards may include:
job instructions, signage, plans, specifications, drawings, , material safety data sheets, diagrams etc
safe work procedures relating to the installation of LP gas systems for a recreational vehicle
regulatory /legislative requirements, pertaining to plumbing and gas fitting regulations, building codes, OH&S and environmental requirements
enterprise specifications and instructions
recognised formulae or tables accepted by the regulatory authority
instructions issued by authorised enterprise personnel

Essential Knowledge and Skills to Be Assessed

Knowledge and skills in the following areas must be assessed as part of this unit:

requirements of the Codes of Practice of the Recreational Vehicle Manufacturer's Association of Australia (RVMAA)
properties of gas, gas and electrical safety, combustion principles, pressure and flow rates, types of systems
relevant statutory and authority requirements related to the installation and tasting of gas systems
the SI system of measurements and calculation of storage capacity
installation procedures and processes
sources of information, including the appropriate standards
the materials requirements determination process
procedures for installing and commissioning gas systems in recreational vehicles
OH&S requirements, including staff responsibilities when working with gas, emergency procedures in case of an LPG leak, LPG materials safety data, safety when working with fumes, selection and use of personal protective equipment
signage for hazardous materials and chemicals
working drawings of components manufactured by the enterprise
reading and interpreting instructions and specifications
uses and selection of tools and equipment
use and care of tools and equipment, including portable and fixed power tools
components and products manufactured by the enterprise
general duty of care requirements
planning and organisation of work
maintenance of work area.

Critical Aspects of Assessment

Evidence of the following is critical:

Installation of an LPG container, piping and two appliances (stove and refrigerator) in a recreational vehicle
completion of work to specifications, plans and drawings
compliance with regulations, standards and enterprise quality procedures and processes
compliance with all safety and OH&S requirements, including use of personal protective clothing and equipment
effective communication with others in the team.

Context of Assessment and Resource Implications

Assessment must include:

demonstration of the installation of a gas container, piping and a minimum of two appliances for a recreational vehicle
demonstration of skills within a suitable workshop with appropriate tools, equipment and materials, and access to appropriate standards.

Assessment Methods
Assessment methods must be chosen to ensure that the installation of a LP gas system in a recreational vehicle can be practically demonstrated. Methods must include assessment of knowledge as well as assessment of practical skills.

The following examples are appropriate for this unit:

direct observation of the candidate carrying out work tasks involving the preparation and installation of LP gas system in a recreational vehicle
review of gas system installed by candidate
oral and written questions about properties of gas, pressure and flow rates, safety issues when handling LP gas etc
review of portfolios of evidence and third party workplace reports of on-the-job performance by the candidate.
