Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to use knowledge of music techniques to lead a group in ensemble or other musical performance.The unit applies to those who have responsibility for motivating others to reach a required standard during performance. Individuals apply a range of musicianship and managerial competencies but are not expected to conduct musical performances.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Enhance professional practice
- 1.1 Identify professional development opportunities in consultation with required personnel
- 1.2 Participate in professional development activities and maintain currency of industry knowledge
- 1.3 Support and maintain professional practice using industry affiliations and strategic alliances
- 1.4 Seek and apply feedback from others and develop strategies for improving own technical and conceptual skills
2. Prepare to lead performances
- 2.1 Confirm performance requirements, context and roles of other performers
- 2.2 Adapt acquired music techniques and technical skills to context of style or playing environment
- 2.3 Plan and undertake regular music practice sessions and develop techniques in line with musical leadership and performance requirements
- 2.4 Enhance music knowledge using analysis of music content and musical intent of resources
- 2.5 Develop and demonstrate aural memory during practice sessions
3. Facilitate expression of ideas and concepts in performance
- 3.1 Adapt and integrate techniques, disciplines and skills that enable expression of concepts during performance
- 3.2 Direct and project interpretive response to required performers
- 3.3 Demonstrate spatial awareness during performance and give directions in line with best performance outcomes for self and others
- 3.4 Follow work health and safety (WHS) principles in performance
- 3.5 Use stagecraft skills, and evaluate and use physical components of performance
4. Evaluate performance
- 4.1 Participate in debriefing sessions and discuss feedback from performance with required personnel
- 4.2 Reflect on own performance and note areas for improvement
- 4.3 Incorporate audience responses and peer feedback on performances and evaluate for future improvements
