Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to identify, select, handle and store materials used in manufactured textile products such as canvas and sail products. This unit applies to individuals working in accordance with pre-determined specifications and established procedures. No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Identify materials for job requirements
  • 1.1 Identify job requirements from work documentation
  • 1.2 Identify materials by appearance, texture, density, stock labels and product codes
  • 1.3 Check stock labels or tags against product codes and manufacturer specifications to confirm correct identification
2. Select materials
  • 2.1 Check materials stocks and confirm sufficient quantities of materials are available to meet job requirements
  • 2.2 Check materials and confirm they conform to specifications, descriptions and relevant quality standards
3. Handle and store materials
  • 3.1 Follow work health and safety practices and work procedures when examining stock
  • 3.2 Identify the need for equipment or team lifting based on nature of materials and level of risk
  • 3.3 Identify and use appropriate lifting equipment to lift heavy or awkward loads in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 3.4 Use appropriate posture and lifting techniques for manual handling of materials
  • 3.5 Store materials in accordance with workplace procedures and manufacturer recommendations
