This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop and apply an understanding of the audition process in the live performance industry.The unit applies to those who have basic performing skills who are pursuing a career in the entertainment, theatre and events industries. They may have skills in music, dancing, acting, cabaret or street performance.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Identify audition requirements and relevant personnel
  • 1.1 Identify audition for consideration
  • 1.2 Discuss audition requirements with required personnel
  • 1.3 Determine audition processes and criteria used by auditioning bodies
  • 1.4 Identify personnel involved in production and their relevant previous work
  • 1.5 Confirm submission requirements for digital auditions as required
  • 1.6 Confirm audition notification processes
  • 1.7 Determine if audition requirements are within range of own abilities and seek advice as required
2. Prepare for audition performances
  • 2.1 Identify and adhere to statutory requirements for health and safety, and the use of copyright material in auditions
  • 2.2 Develop performance according to auditioning requirements
  • 2.3 Source required resources for own audition performance
  • 2.4 Rehearse audition performance and obtain feedback from required personnel
3. Present live auditions
  • 3.1 Implement relaxation techniques to overcome performance anxiety
  • 3.2 Demonstrate adherence to dress code requirements and ability to act in a manner required for the audition context
  • 3.3 Present supporting material to personnel conducting audition
  • 3.4 Present performance, incorporating performance techniques and synchronising with ensemble members as required
  • 3.5 Demonstrate careful listening and respond to instructions given during audition
4. Present digital auditions
  • 4.1 Set up recording, lighting and sound equipment according to audition requirements
  • 4.2 Implement relaxation techniques to overcome performance anxiety
  • 4.3 Demonstrate adherence to dress code requirements and ability to act in a manner required for the audition context
  • 4.4 Record audition, incorporating performance techniques
  • 4.5 Submit audition recording and supporting material to required personnel
5. Follow up and review auditions
  • 5.1 Confirm expected time for hearing outcome and confirm contact details
  • 5.2 Where result is successful, obtain details of necessary follow-up
  • 5.3 Analyse and assess own performance in comparison to previous auditions and others auditioning as required
