Description
This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to distribute tailings in Coal and Metalliferous mining and Extractive.This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare to distribute tailings
- 1.1 Access, interpret, and apply tailings distribution documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
- 1.2 Obtain, read, interpret and clarify/confirm work requirements
- 1.3 Communicate with other personnel using approved communication methods
- 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
- 1.5 Select and check for faults, tools/equipment for work activities
- 1.6 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
- 1.7 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
- 1.8 Use approved dust suppression and extraction methods
- 1.9 Prepare site for positioning of equipment
- 1.10 Position and stabilise equipment
2. Start-up equipment in sequence
- 2.1 Carry out start-up procedures and complete start-up checks
- 2.2 Confirm plant is operational
3. Monitor and disperse tailings
- 3.1 Read and interpret data from equipment indicators to determine deposition parameters
- 3.2 Continuously inspect plant and identify defects and potential problems
- 3.3 Adjust equipment to approved operating parameters and optimise performance, maintain efficiency to meet tailings quality targets
- 3.4 Control feed to equipment
- 3.5 Monitor bunded areas and manage overflows
- 3.6 Complete all required documentation
- 3.7 Continually monitor hazards and risks , and ensure safety of self, other personnel, plant and equipment
- 3.8 Report spillages
- 3.9 Complete recording and reporting requirements
- 3.10 Ensure tailings meet fill plant operating parameters
4. Conduct housekeeping activities
- 4.1 Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials
- 4.2 Clean and maintain condition of equipment, ensure suitability for use, and address/report issues
- 4.3 Manage and/or report hazards, and maintain a safe working environment
- 4.4 Process records
5. Shutdown in sequence and/or isolate equipment
- 5.1 Flush lines to remove all material
- 5.2 Shutdown or isolate equipment
- 5.3 Perform post shutdown or isolation checks
