Description

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to safely perform basic boatyard operations on a variety of vessels, including servicing, repairs, upgrades, maintenance, refits and/or installation. This unit applies to individuals working in a marina who apply safe work practices when undertaking a range of basic boatyard operations. This unit applies to individuals who provide assistance under supervision in the operational management of the marina.Licensing/Regulatory InformationNo licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

1 Plan and prepare boatyard operations

1.1 Job requirements are identified, interpreted and confirmed with relevant personnel, as necessary
1.2 Appropriate plant, tools and equipment required to undertake maintenance activities are identified and assembled according to workplace procedures
1.3 Hazards are identified, risks assessed, and control measures implemented according to supervisor instructions and workplace procedures
1.4 Safety data sheets (SDS) are accessed, interpreted and followed according to workplace procedures

2 Conduct boatyard operations

2.1 Relevant work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) policies and procedures, including reporting, are followed
2.2 Personal protective equipment (PPE) is identified, selected and used according to workplace policies and procedures
2.3 Workplace procedures and supervisor instructions are followed at all times
2.4 Protection by barricades and warning signage of restricted access work areas are prepared in accordance with workplace policies and procedures
2.5 Signage and utilisation of all other work areas are prepared in accordance with workplace policies and procedures
2.6 Relevant plant, tools and equipment are prepared and checked for function according to workplace policies, procedures and manufacturer's instructions
2.7 Work activity is carried out according to workplace policies and procedures and verified by relevant personnel
2.8 High-risk equipment for which separate licences are required to operate are identified and verified with relevant personnel

3 Complete boatyard operations and clean up work area

3.1 Waste and scraps are removed and material that can be reused is collected and stored
3.2 Plant, tools and equipment and work area are cleaned and inspected according to workplace procedures and manufacturer’s instructions
3.3 Defective or malfunctioning plant, tools, equipment and systems are reported according to workplace procedures
3.4 Plant, tools and equipment are stored and cleaned according to workplace procedures, manufacturer instructions and supervisor instructions
3.5 Hazardous materials and substances are identified, handled and stored according to workplace policies, procedures and supervisor instructions
3.6 Required documentation is completed according to workplace procedures
