Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to construct costumes where products other than traditional textiles are an integral part of the costume design. It involves the design and creation of specialised costumes required for various performances.The unit applies to those who display a high level of initiative and judgement as they take responsibility for ensuring the quality of specialised costumes required for productions. They may be responsible for supervising others.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Determine requirements for specialised costumes
- 1.1 Evaluate and determine the need for hard and soft sculptured specialised costumes
- 1.2 Undertake research to establish the broad parameters for costume construction and availability of materials
- 1.3 Use research material to adapt costume designs for specific productions
- 1.4 Identify performance and performers’ costume requirements
2. Develop specifications for specialised costumes
- 2.1 Determine the equipment, tools, materials and techniques to be used
- 2.2 Determine quantity and cost of materials required for construction to ensure efficient use of resources
- 2.3 Produce working drawings and specifications for specialised costumes
- 2.4 Seek assistance from other departments or personnel as required
3. Create and fit specialised costumes
- 3.1 Take and record measurements of performers
- 3.2 Develop pattern shapes to meet design specifications
- 3.3 Select materials for supports and bases to meet production requirements
- 3.4 Construct costumes and related accessories according to performance requirements
- 3.5 Conduct fittings with performers
- 3.6 Document and action required adjustments and alterations
- 3.7 Complete specialised costumes according to production requirements
4. Assemble specialised costumes
- 4.1 Sew costume pieces together according to specifications
- 4.2 Identify modifications to costume in consultation with required personnel
- 4.3 Finish specialised costumes according to requirements
- 4.4 Label and code all costumes for identification during productions
