Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to maintain a high level of vigilance over time in a complex, dynamic, high consequence environment. It includes building situational awareness of the continuing status of areas of responsibility, maintaining vigilance, and acting on situational information.The unit applies to those who hold a position of control in any high pressure, high accountability work environment, such as those found within complex autonomous environments where a high degree of situational awareness is critical.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Build situational awareness
  • 1.1 Organise workspace for screen visibility, accessibility and ergonomic comfort
  • 1.2 Continually compare current situation with what constitutes normal operations
  • 1.3 Control focus of attention to continue to take in the wider view when dealing with specific events and issues
  • 1.4 Prioritise and manage information flow to optimise situational awareness
2. Maintain vigilance over time
  • 2.1 Manage own fatigue in line with organisational protocols
  • 2.2 Regularly pause and reassess throughout sustained periods on high alert
  • 2.3 Anticipate circumstances that can undermine situational awareness and seek to address them
  • 2.4 Identify loss of situational awareness in self and others and take action to recover a high level of alertness
  • 2.5 Maintain situational awareness to identify changed conditions, respond to cues and abnormal situations
3. Act on situational information
  • 3.1 Interpret system data and respond to system alerts and alarms following organisational procedures
  • 3.2 Confirm faults and malfunctions and rectify within scope of own role or escalate according to organisational escalation procedure
  • 3.3 Project information on status of work activities to predict impact on future operations and outcomes
  • 3.4 Prioritise current work activities based on situational awareness of current and projected status to maximise outcomes
