Description
This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to form solid timber shapes using hot processes within a mould, existing structure or over a former assembly.Where complex forming is required unit MEM09021 Interpret and produce drawings of curved 3-D shapes should also be selected.Where straightforward construction and assembly of marine timber components is undertaken, including laminating by cold processes, unit MEM25005 Construct and assemble marine vessel timber components should also be selected. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.Band: AUnit Weight: 2

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Determine job requirements
  • 1.1 Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • 1.2 Comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times
  • 1.3 Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with SOPs
  • 1.4 Identify job requirements from specifications, drawings, job sheets or work instructions
2 Prepare to form timber shapes
  • 2.1 Select appropriate bending process and identify components
  • 2.2 Determine construction sequence
  • 2.3 Select and use tools and equipment appropriate to job requirements
3 Form timber shapes
  • 3.1 Select standard jigs/templates to suit job application
  • 3.2 Construct jigs/templates to suit required shape
  • 3.3 Construct components to specifications using hot processes
  • 3.4 Set up laminating/heating equipment according to SOPs, where applicable
  • 3.5 Construct and shape components to specifications
  • 3.6 Ensure final components conform to specifications
