Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to organise movement in order to compose a short dance sequence of limited topic or scope. The skills developed in this unit are the building blocks for the craft of choreography.The unit applies to those who compose short dance sequences as part of dance studies or for informal presentations. At this level, dance composition is simple in nature and could be applied to a variety of dance styles. Work is usually undertaken with supervision, though some autonomy and judgement can be expected.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Analyse elements of dance composition
  • 1.1 Discuss with required personnel elements of dance and how they are used to craft movement
  • 1.2 Analyse existing professional dance compositions and identify components of the composition process
  • 1.3 Identify how intent and form are used in dance composition and how they can be documented
  • 1.4 Discuss with required personnel how concepts of music assist in providing ways to manipulate form and movement
  • 1.5 Identify sources of information and stimulus that can be used to generate ideas and concepts for composing dance
2. Develop dance composition techniques
  • 2.1 Use different starting points when composing dance
  • 2.2 Practise and document using different types of intent and form when composing dance
  • 2.3 Craft movement and manipulate elements of dance using identified sources and stimuli, and own creativity
3. Compose and evaluate basic dance sequences
  • 3.1 Compose and document dance sequence with specific intent and form
  • 3.2 Communicate composition ideas and concepts to required personnel using dance terminology
  • 3.3 Demonstrate sequence to dancers and required personnel using effective verbal and physical demonstration skills
  • 3.4 Organise to have sequence recorded for evaluation purposes
  • 3.5 Evaluate work using recording and seek feedback from required personnel
  • 3.6 Edit and refine dance sequence according to feedback and self-evaluation
