Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to develop low risk car driving behaviours in others. It includes demonstrating applicable low risk car driving rules, regulations and strategies to drivers delivering training on low risk car driving principles and monitoring and maintaining low risk car driving behaviours of drivers. It also includes evaluating drivers on their low risk car driving competence, reviewing evaluation of driver low risk car driving competence, dealing with behavioural barriers to learning, developing vehicle operation and control skills, and interpreting and applying regulatory requirements and road law expertise.It also includes developing higher-order cognitive and technical skills, such as hazard perception, correctly reading a driving environment and responding appropriately, exercising risk management strategies that contribute to low risk car driving behaviours, and meeting community expectations.This unit applies to car driving instructors.Work is performed without supervision. Developing low risk car driving behaviours in others involves the application of learning principles for different cohorts, instructional methods, training competence and experience, higher-order car driving expertise, navigation skills, road law expertise, routine procedures and regulatory requirements across a range of operational situations and a variety of driving contexts.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1 Demonstrate applicable low risk car driving rules and regulations to drivers
  • 1.1 Work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) regulatory requirements are identified, documented and communicated
  • 1.2 Current and relevant road rules and regulations for each car driving task are identified and clarified when driving with a driver
  • 1.3 Road rules are explained and demonstrated to car driver in a low risk manner
2 Demonstrate lowrisk car driving strategies to drivers
  • 2.1 Pre- and post-operational inspections and checks are demonstrated in accordance with national road safety standards, as required
  • 2.2 Low risk driving techniques that keep car driver at a low risk level are demonstrated and applied
  • 2.3 Low risk driving behaviours are applied when driving
  • 2.4 Vehicle operation and control skills and knowledge to minimise risks are explained and demonstrated to driver
3 Deliver training on low risk car driving principles
  • 3.1 Training objectives and methods are planned, documented and communicated in accordance with lesson plan
  • 3.2 Training is conducted in a low risk and accessible environment
  • 3.3 Specific needs for training are identified and confirmed through observation and evaluation of driver capability
  • 3.4 Information about low risk car driving principles is made available to driver and explained
  • 3.5 Behaviour principles behind low risk driving is demonstrated and explained to driver
  • 3.6 Driver is directed through task performance in rural and urban environments
4 Monitor and maintain low risk car driving behaviours of drivers
  • 4.1 Medium to high risk driving behaviours are identified and constructive feedback provided to driver
  • 4.2 Legal ramifications of driving offences are explained clearly to driver
  • 4.3 Importance of continuous effort and practise of low risk driving is communicated and reinforced
