Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to assess conservation requirements through the research and application of recognised conservation principles and practices. It includes the ability to prepare comprehensive reports on assessment requirements, including estimation of costs for required work.This unit applies to individuals working with designed glass.Licensing, legislative or certification requirements may apply to this unit and relevant state/territory and local government agencies should be consulted to determine any necessary certification or licensing for undertaking glass and glazing work. Access to construction sites requires certification of general induction training specified by the National Code of Practice for Induction for Construction Work (ASCC 2007).

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan conservation assessment
  • 1.1 Identify and follow work health and safety, legislative and organisational requirements
  • 1.2 Establish, confirm and clarify purpose of the assessment with appropriate personnel
  • 1.3 Determine and inspect location of the leadlight and stained glass panels to be assessed for information relevant to the process
  • 1.4 Research leadlighting and stained glass conservation procedures applicable to the job for approval with relevant people
2. Prepare for the assessment
  • 2.1 Assemble, position and check tools and equipment prior to use to ensure they are appropriate for the assessment, serviceable and in a safe condition
  • 2.2 Assemble plans and other documents that show industry standards and historical data, and position to allow for confirmation of the panel structure and placement
  • 2.3 Take photographs of the panel for documentation of condition and for later reference
3. Assess the panel
  • 3.1 Inspect glass features, faults and treatments and document accurately
  • 3.2 Investigate and accurately document structural faults, problems and other materials
  • 3.3 Assess and accurately document impacts of environmental factors
4. Finalise and report on the assessment
  • 4.1 Remove, clean and store tools and equipment appropriately
  • 4.2 Clean assessment area and dispose of rubbish appropriately
  • 4.3 Determine and confirm conservation requirements resulting from the assessment with appropriate personnel
  • 4.4 Prepare and provide condition report that includes detailed photographic evidence with details of issues and recommendations regarding remedial work
  • 4.5 Develop a work plan and cost estimate for all required conservation work
