Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to develop low risk motorcycle riding behaviours in others. It includes demonstrating applicable low risk motorcycle riding rules, regulations and strategies to motorcycle riders, delivering training on low risk motorcycle riding principles and monitoring and maintaining low risk motorcycle riding behaviours of motorcycle riders. It also includes evaluating riders on their low risk motorcycle riding competence, reviewing evaluation of rider low risk motorcycle riding competence, dealing with behavioural barriers to learning, developing motorcycle operation and control skills, and interpreting and applying regulatory requirements and road law expertise.It also includes developing higher order cognitive and technical skills such as hazard perception, correctly reading a motorcycle riding environment and responding appropriately, exercising risk management strategies that contribute to low risk motorcycle riding behaviours, and meeting community expectations. This unit applies to motorcycle riding instructors.Work is performed without supervision. Developing low risk motorcycle riding behaviours in others involves the application of learning principles of different cohorts, instructional methods, training competence and experience, higher order motorcycle rider expertise, navigation skills, road law expertise, routine procedures and regulatory requirements across a range of operational situations and a variety of riding contexts.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Demonstrate applicable lowrisk motorcycle riding rules and regulations to riders
  • 1.1 Work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) regulatory requirements are identified, documented and communicated
  • 1.2 Current and relevant road rules and regulations for each motorcycle riding task are identified and clarified when accompanying a rider
  • 1.3 Road rules are explained and demonstrated to rider in a low risk manner
2 Demonstrate lowrisk motorcycle riding strategies to riders
  • 2.1 Low risk riding techniques that keep motorcycle rider at a low risk level are demonstrated and applied
  • 2.2 Low risk riding behaviours are applied for motorcycle riders and pillion passengers, as required
  • 2.3 Motorcycle operation and control skills and knowledge to minimise risks are explained and demonstrated to rider
  • 2.4 Features and benefits of protective clothing are explained and demonstrated to rider
  • 2.5 Pre- and post-operational inspections and checks are demonstrated in accordance with national road safety standards, as required
3 Deliver training on low risk motorcycle riding principles
  • 3.1 Training objectives and methods are planned, documented and communicated in accordance with lesson plan
  • 3.2 Training is conducted in a low risk and accessible environment
  • 3.3 Specific needs for training are identified and confirmed through observation and evaluation of rider capability
  • 3.4 Information about low risk motorcycle riding principles is made available to rider and is explained
  • 3.5 Behaviour principles behind low risk motorcycle riding is demonstrated and explained to rider
  • 3.6 Rider is directed through task performance in rural and urban environments
4 Monitor and maintain low risk motorcycle riding behaviour
  • 4.1 Medium to high risk motorcycle riding behaviours are identified and constructive feedback is provided to rider
  • 4.2 Legal ramifications of motorcycle riding offences are explained clearly to rider
  • 4.3 Importance of continuous effort and practise of low risk motorcycle riding is communicated and reinforced
  • 4.4 Low risk motorcycle riding levels are assessed and reviewed
  • 4.5 Various methods for encouraging learning are implemented to provide diverse approaches to meet rider individual needs
5 Evaluate riders on their low risk motorcycle riding competence
