Description
This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to paint panels with water, oil or solvent based paints using roller coating line, spray booth or curtain coating equipment to finish coat wood panel products.The unit applies to production operators and technicians who paint panels in a forest and wood products factory settingNo licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for painting
  • 1.1 Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.
  • 1.2 Select appropriate personal protective and other equipment and check for operational effectiveness.
  • 1.3 Obtain type and quantity of panels for painting from storage.
  • 1.4 Select panel painting process, feed rates and paints and plan in line with work order.
2. Paint panels
  • 2.1 Use equipment in line with organisational safety procedures, manufacturer’s instructions and environmental protection practices.
  • 2.2 Load paint products in equipment and apply paint to panel, monitoring and adjusting flow rates and viscosity continually.
  • 2.3 Check paint operations regularly and clear blockages and filters to maintain paint coverage.
  • 2.4 Check panels regularly for surface quality and contamination, and grade according to work order requirements.
  • 2.5 Remove defective panels from painting process and review for disposal or re-painting.
  • 2.6 Dry and stack material safely in designated location.
3. Shut down and clean equipment
  • 3.1 Coordinate shutdown procedures with other line operators in line with organisational safety procedures.
  • 3.2 Turn off pumps and flush equipment in line with manufacturer’s instructions.
  • 3.3 Dispose of excess paint and flushing liquid in line with environmental protection practices.
  • 3.4 Store equipment and paint in line with organisational procedures.
  • 3.5 Record and report production outcomes and equipment faults to appropriate personnel.
