Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to follow basic processes for the assembly of product components based on existing designs and patterns using domestic or industrial equipment. Textile products may be apparel or non-wearable items.This unit applies to individuals preparing for work in the textile, clothing and footwear industry, usually within a pre-employment training program. Work is carried out under supervision.No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Identify assembly requirements
  • 1.1 Review design and pattern information and identify size, style and fabric required
  • 1.2 Identify quality standards to be achieved
  • 1.3 Identify sequencing of assembly operations according to pattern requirements
  • 1.4 Accurately calculate and document fabric amount according to fabric width, pattern size and pattern requirements
  • 1.5 Prepare tools and equipment to achieve assembly outcomes
  • 1.6 Identify and follow work health and safety requirements
2 Prepare and assemble components
  • 2.1 Lay out pattern pieces and secure to make best use of fabric length and to match fabric pattern, nap and weave
  • 2.2 Cut fabric according to seam allowances and pattern markings
  • 2.3 Check cut pattern pieces against requirements and fabric characteristics, and make any required corrections
  • 2.4 Lay out components according to planned sequence of operations
  • 2.5 Assemble components to achieve product requirements and accepted quality standards
  • 2.6 Complete finishing tasks according to design requirements
3. Complete work
  • 3.1 Confirm item meets quality standards and seek guidance from supervisor to address any deficiencies
  • 3.2 Clean work space and equipment and store tools and equipment in accordance with procedures
