Description
This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to interpret plans and layouts and prepare computerised quotations for roof and floor trusses and wall frames. Work is completed in a timber and wood products production setting.The unit applies to Customer Service/Sales Assistant (retail or wholesale), Customer Service officer, Sales and Merchandising Team leader, Timber Advisor. No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Select software
  • 1.1 Identify and interpret work order, review and evaluate software options.
  • 1.2 Select appropriate software program to meet quotation requirements.
2. Interpret plans and loading conditions
  • 2.1 Interpret and assess plans, drawing views and notes; identify loading information and design requirements and restrictions.
  • 2.2 Refer to engineers for calculations.
  • 2.3 Obtain additional information and data from appropriate personnel and other sources.
  • 2.4 Create functional and pictorial images of structures, including trusses, frames and or floors.
  • 2.5 Refer design requirements outside software limitations to appropriate personnel for resolution.
3. Use computer programs to estimate components
  • 3.1 Transfer fixed design details to layout data in line with software requirements.
  • 3.2 Identify truss, frame or floor type and select timber type and species in line with material suitability and availability.
  • 3.3 Define design structure using spacing of components, including trusses, frames and or floors in line with industry standards.
  • 3.4 Fix component sizes to clarify and firm design options.
  • 3.5 Select layouts, spacing and sizing of individual structural members progressively in line with software requirements.
  • 3.6 Produce design details in line with software and order requirements.
  • 3.7 Select design options based on feasibility, ease of erection, cost, material availability, customer preference and site requirements.
  • 3.8 Review design details and modify without compromising truss, frame or structure strength.
4. Prepare quotation
  • 4.1 Calculate total cost and produce quotation in designated format, using appropriate software.
  • 4.2 Review quotation and check for completeness and accuracy in line with organisational procedures.
  • 4.3 Complete computer records and prepare quotation for presentation in line with organisational procedures.
