Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to inspect and report river performance.It includes inspecting and reporting on river flow performance of flood plains and river environments. It also includes monitoring river conditions, water quality, maintaining integrity of the bank, regulating and monitoring flows.This unit applies to field staff with the responsibility of inspecting rivers. Those undertaking this unit would work under supervision, performing routine tasks, in familiar contexts.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Identify river performance requirements
  • 1.1 Record river performance according to relevant legislation and workplace requirements
  • 1.2 Identify and record river conditions according to workplace procedures
  • 1.3 Conduct a risk assessment of the riverbank and identify control measures
  • 1.4 Identify environmental factors impacting water flows and quality
  • 1.5 Select and check equipment to meet safety requirements of task and worksite
  • 1.6 Select, fit and use personal protective equipment according to workplace procedures
2 Inspect and monitor performance
  • 2.1 Schedule and conduct routine inspections of rivers or waterways according to workplace procedures
  • 2.2 Monitor water quality and flows of rivers
  • 2.3 Adjust required flows based on hydraulics and environmental factors
3 Report on river performance
  • 3.1 Collect, interpret and report on process data and compile report
  • 3.2 Compile river data report and discuss with relevant personnel
  • 3.3 Report observations outside defined parameters and report to relevant personnel for further action
