Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to respond to and rectify rail traffic autonomous equipment for operation.This includes identifying repair requirements, conducting minor repairs, checking and reporting minor repairs.This unit defines rail traffic as a train.Work must be carried out in accordance with organisational procedures and regulations, and safe working codes of practice relevant to fault diagnosis and rectification.Work involves the application of routine minor fault diagnosis and rectification procedures when maintaining the safety and operation of an autonomous rail traffic and rolling stock across a variety of operational rail transport contexts.People achieving competence in this unit will need to fulfil the applicable state/territory legislated rail safety requirements and to comply with relevant codes of practice and/or guidelines.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Identify autonomous rail traffic systems faults, defects and deficiencies
  • 1.1 Autonomous rail traffic location and possible fault cause are determined
  • 1.2 Hazards are identified, risks assessed and control measures implemented
  • 1.3 Operational capability of autonomous rail traffic equipment is evaluated
  • 1.4 Autonomous rail traffic and equipment are made safe for inspection
  • 1.5 Faulty or damaged components or equipment are identified, visually inspected and assessed
  • 1.6 Impact of faults on autonomous rail traffic is identified and safe operating capabilities are evaluated
2 Rectify autonomous rail traffic systems minor faults
  • 2.1 Minor repairs and/or isolations are carried out in accordance with manufacturer specifications and workplace procedures
  • 2.2 Equipment, tools and required materials are operated, applied and handled in accordance with work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) requirements and manufacturer specifications to prevent injury and damage
  • 2.3 Factors that impact on safe rail traffic operations are continuously monitored
  • 2.4 Situational awareness is applied through effective visual scans, use of communication systems, use of rail traffic information and use of systems of safeworking in accordance with workplace procedures
3 Check and report autonomous rail traffic minor repairs, rectification or isolation
  • 3.1 Minor repairs and/or isolations are checked for safety compliance
  • 3.2 Equipment is checked to ensure it conforms to manufacturer specifications and required standards
  • 3.3 Action taken is reported/recorded in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 3.4 Autonomous rail traffic systems capabilities are monitored and continually evaluated
  • 3.5 Communication is maintained with relevant personnel and clarification is sought about anything that is not clear in relation to processes and procedures
  • 3.6 Autonomous rail traffic is returned to operations in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 3.7 Autonomous rail traffic is visually inspected on departure in accordance with workplace procedures
