This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to plan, install and manage the operation of lighting systems at outdoor events, where factors such as weather conditions can significantly affect operations.The unit applies to those who display a high level of initiative and judgement as they take responsibility for ensuring the quality of lighting at productions and events held outdoors. It involves the planning, supervision and installation of lighting technologies.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan lighting for outdoor events
  • 1.1 Determine lighting requirements in consultation with required personnel and according to production documentation
  • 1.2 Review regulations that affect the design of outdoor lighting systems, in consideration of environmental and insurance requirements
  • 1.3 Assess venues or sites to identify availability of power and other issues, and plan for contingencies
  • 1.4 Perform a job safety analysis of tasks and incorporate health and safety considerations into overall planning
  • 1.5 Develop schedules of outdoor lighting system requirements, paying special attention to additional infrastructure and equipment requirements
  • 1.6 Reach agreement on final configuration of outdoor lighting systems
2. Install lighting systems for outdoor events
  • 2.1 Complete checks to ensure availability of all resources prior to installation
  • 2.2 Supervise the connection of control systems
  • 2.3 Monitor progress of lighting system installation against work plans
  • 2.4 Implement contingency plans as required to ensure that production deadlines are met
  • 2.5 Confirm all work activities comply with health and safety requirements
  • 2.6 Test aspects of lighting system installation regularly to check that required lighting effects can be achieved
  • 2.7 Use the services of licensed personnel to complete specialised work as required
  • 2.8 Liaise with required personnel during installation as required
  • 2.9 Review finished installation with required personnel, and adjust as required
3.Monitor outdoor lighting operations
  • 3.1 Monitor quality of lighting and take action to rectify problems as required
  • 3.2 Communicate effectively with colleagues regarding lighting installation processes
  • 3.3 Evaluate outdoor lighting operations with required personnel and note areas for future improvement
