Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to operate rail traffic with due consideration of route conditions in accordance with system of safeworking, regulatory requirements and workplace procedures.It includes identifying route requirements, applying route knowledge to planning a rail traffic journey, and using route knowledge during a rail traffic journey in accordance with workplace requirements and rail network standards.People achieving competence in this unit will need to fulfil the applicable state/territory legislated rail safety requirements and to comply with relevant codes of practice and/or guidelines.Work is generally performed without supervision and within a team environment. It involves the application of routine operational principles and procedures when operating a rail traffic with due consideration of route conditions as part of workplace activities across a variety of operational contexts within the Australian rail system.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1 Identify and interpret route information
  • 1.1 Information on anything likely to affect critical aspects of a rail traffic route is accessed in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 1.2 Information on critical aspects of a rail traffic route is interpreted and analysed for use when planning a rail traffic journey and operating a rail traffic during a journey
2 Apply route knowledge when planning a rail traffic journey
  • 2.1 Route information is applied to planning a rail traffic journey in accordance with workplace procedures and system of safeworking, codes of practice and regulations
  • 2.2 Events and circumstances likely to affect planned running schedule are communicated to relevant personnel
  • 2.3 Relevant codes of practice, system of safeworking, signalling and/or Automatic Train Protect/Control (ATP/C) requirements are applied when planning or supervising rail traffic operations
  • 2.4 Instructions concerning planned rail traffic operation are communicated to relevant personnel to ensure safe and efficient ontime running
3 Use route knowledge during a rail traffic journey
  • 3.1 Route information is evaluated and applied to managing rail traffic operations during a rail traffic journey in accordance with workplace procedures, system of safeworking, codes of practice and regulations
  • 3.2 Hazardous situations along rail traffic route are recognised and appropriate actions are taken to minimise risk to personnel and equipment
  • 3.3 Communications are maintained with network control officer and other relevant personnel during rail traffic journey in accordance with relevant codes of practice, system of safeworking and workplace procedures
  • 3.4 Network control officer information and other instructions are received, interpreted and applied to ensure safe and effective operation of rail traffic
