Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to work safely with polymeric chemicals in underground coal mining. It includes conducting basic planning, preparation and housekeeping activities to support operations in proximity to polymeric chemicals use.The unit applies to those who may be exposed to the use and application of polymeric chemicals in the work environment. They generally work under supervision to undertake a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures and take some responsibility for the quality of work outcomes. The use of polymeric chemicals may include storage, transportation, handling, mixing, pumping, injection, void filling and disposal of excess materials and associated equipment.Licensing, legislative and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories and industry sectors. Users must check requirements with relevant body before applying the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare to work safely with polymeric chemicals
  • 1.1 Obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
  • 1.2 Access, interpret and apply documentation required to work safely with polymeric chemicals in underground coal mining
  • 1.3 Select and wear personal protective equipment according to site requirements
  • 1.4 Identify potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, implement control measures within scope of own role, and escalate where required
  • 1.5 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures and identify steps required to respond to emergencies
2. Operate in work area where polymeric chemicals are in use
  • 2.1 Communicate work activities with others within scope of own role
  • 2.2 Identify and locate emergency response equipment in work area
  • 2.3 Monitor hazards and risks within scope of own role, confirm safe operation of plant and equipment, and escalate where required
3. Carry out housekeeping activities
  • 3.1 Conduct housekeeping activities according to site requirements
  • 3.2 Identify execution of housekeeping activities that do not meet site requirements, respond within scope of own role and escalate where required
