Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to consolidate freight.It includes assessing the scope to consolidate freight, combining or consolidating multiple shipments of products into higher volume shipments, and preparing related consignment documentation in accordance with relevant codes of practice and regulations.It is performed under general supervision, with some accountability and responsibility for self and others in achieving prescribed outcomes.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Assess scope to consolidate freight
  • 1.1 Capacity and capability of different transport modes available to the organisation are assessed against proposed task
  • 1.2 Individual consignment loads are evaluated to identify relevant information needed to combine or consolidate freight
  • 1.3 Freight schedule is reviewed for consolidation planning and resource capacity
  • 1.4 Hazards are identified, risks are assessed, including chain of responsibility, and control measures are proposed for the consolidation of freight
  • 1.5 Proposed consolidation is matched against operational capacity and capability of carriers ensuring stakeholder consultation, as required
  • 1.6 Environmental considerations are included in scoping of freight
2 Implement and monitor freight consolidation
  • 2.1 Information is analysed to determine where opportunities for freight consolidation exist
  • 2.2 Regulatory packaging and labelling requirements for consolidated freight are identified and followed
  • 2.3 Loading of freight is planned in accordance with workplace policies and procedures and regulatory requirements
  • 2.4 Freight is consolidated taking into account segregation requirements
  • 2.5 Volumes and weights of proposed consolidation are calculated, and exceptions reviewed
  • 2.6 Work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) and chain of responsibility procedures are implemented
3 Prepare consignment documentation
  • 3.1 Consignment documentation required for consolidated freight is confirmed in accordance with regulatory and workplace requirements
  • 3.2 Labelling and marking requirements of freight are documented in accordance with current regulations and workplace requirements
  • 3.3 Consignment documentation is completed and filed in accordance with workplace procedures
