Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required by performers such as actors, singers, dancers, circus performers and comedians to prepare their own hair, make-up and costume for performances. These could be in commercial, competition or community settings.Work at this level requires a range of well-developed skills where some discretion and judgment are required and individuals are expected to take responsibility for their own outputs.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Clarify hair, make-up and costume requirements
  • 1.1 In consultation with relevant personnel, clarify performance requirements and identify factors that influence hair, make-up and costume preparation
  • 1.2 In consultation with relevant personnel, plan styles and colours of hair, make-up and costumes according to performance requirements
  • 1.3 Investigate differences in performance environments and include strategies to address them in production plans
  • 1.4 Confirm final designs and plans for make-up and hairdressing with relevant personnel
2. Treat costumes in preparation for performance
  • 2.1 In consultation with relevant personnel, check costumes and determine treatment required in preparation for performances
  • 2.2 Complete simple costume modifications, repairs and laundering according to quality, safety and time requirements
  • 2.3 Review modifications against production plans and complete required documentation
  • 2.4 Label and store own costumes according to workplace and production requirements
  • 2.5 Ensure materials for maintaining hair, make-up and costumes are available for retouches during performances
3. Apply make-up and hairstyles
  • 3.1 Work with relevant personnel as required to examine the physical structures and features of own head and body, and identify areas requiring corrective action or camouflage make-up and hairdressing
  • 3.2 Ensure own make-up and hair tools, products and equipment are available in line with production schedules
  • 3.3 Apply and remove products in sequence with appropriate techniques according to health and safety procedures
4. Finalise make-up and hairstyles
  • 4.1 Select and apply finishing techniques to achieve planned design
  • 4.2 Follow procedures to minimise environmental impact of materials and products
  • 4.3 Work with relevant personnel to review hair, make-up and costume plans and check that final effect meets production requirements
  • 4.4 Document hair or make-up design for future performances and continuity purposes as required
