Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required by performers to prepare their own hair, make-up and costume for performances. Performances could be in commercial, competitive or community settings.The unit applies to those who are actors, singers, dancers, circus performers and comedians requiring a range of well-developed performance preparation skills, where some discretion and judgment are required, and individuals are expected to take responsibility for their own outputs.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Confirm hair, make-up and costume requirements
  • 1.1 Confirm performance requirements and identify factors that influence hair, make-up and costume preparation in consultation with required personnel
  • 1.2 Plan styles and colours of hair, make-up and costumes according to performance requirements in consultation with required personnel
  • 1.3 Investigate differences in performance environments and include strategies to address them in production plans as required
  • 1.4 Confirm final designs and plans for make-up and hairdressing with required personnel
2. Prepare costumes and retouching materials for performance
  • 2.1 Determine updates or treatments required for costuming in consultation with required personnel
  • 2.2 Complete simple costume modifications, repairs and laundering according to quality, safety and time requirements
  • 2.3 Review modifications against production plans and complete required documentation
  • 2.4 Label and store own costumes according to workplace and production requirements
  • 2.5 Source retouching materials for maintaining hair, make-up and costumes during performances
3. Apply make-up and hairstyles
  • 3.1 Examine the physical structures and features of own head and body, and identify areas requiring corrective action with make-up and hairdressing, in consultation with required personnel
  • 3.2 Apply and remove products in sequence with required techniques, according to health and safety procedures
  • 3.3 Select and apply finishing techniques for achieving planned design
  • 3.4 Follow procedures for minimising environmental impact of materials and products used
  • 3.5 Review hair, make-up and costume plans and check with required personnel that final appearance meets production requirements
  • 3.6 Document hair or make-up design for future performances and continuity purposes as required
