Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to conduct operational checks on in-service mechanical plant. Mechanical plantrefers to theinfrastructureused in the operation and maintenance of power generating facilities.An operational check is the verification that a group of components are working together. An operational check consists of running in-service mechanical plant to ensure that all the systems function together safely. Competency in this unit requires the ability to plan for plant in-service checks, carry out in-service mechanical checks and complete work. Individuals will, in general, work as an operator in a power generation facility. Power generation plant operators are trained and authorised to isolate, prepare plant and issue permits to work.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Plan for mechanicalplant in-service checks
  • 1.1 Work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) regulations, legislative requirements, codes of practice, manufacturers’ recommendations and specifications, environmental requirements and workplace procedures are identified, applied and monitored
  • 1.2 Work and resource requirements are identified from relevant personnel and documentation in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 1.3 In-service mechanical plant status and work requirements are confirmed with relevant personnel and by site inspection in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 1.4 Equipment is checked for correct calibration and operation and materials or components are obtained and inspected in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 1.5 Potential hazards are identified, and risk control measures are selected in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 1.6 Pre-access checks on in-service mechanical plant are carried out in accordance with workplace procedures
2 Carry out in-service mechanical plantcheck
  • 2.1 In-service mechanical plant is operated in accordance with manufacturers' recommendations and specifications, and workplace procedures
  • 2.2 In-service mechanical plant checks are monitored and observed to detect deviations from normal operation in accordance with workplace procedures,
  • 2.3 Corrective actions are taken to rectify in-service mechanical plant abnormalities in accordance with manufacturers' recommendations and specifications, and workplace procedures
  • 2.4 In-service mechanical plant checks are performed in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 2.5 In-service mechanical plant integrity and personnel safety are maintained in consultation with personnel and technical and operational documentation in accordance with workplace procedures
3 Complete work
  • 3.1 In-service mechanical plant checks are completed and control measures are returned to required operational status in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 3.2 Relevant personnel are notified of completion of work in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 3.3 In-service mechanical plant problems and abnormalities are reported in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 3.4 In-service mechanical plant results are interpreted and documented in accordance with workplace procedures
