This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to conduct bitumen tanker operations in civil construction.It applies to those working in operational roles. The individual is generally a skilled operator and may provide theoretical advice and support a team.Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and industry sectors. Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for bitumen tanker operations
  • 1.1 Obtain, interpret and confirm work requirements
  • 1.2 Access, interpret and apply bitumen tanker operations documentation and confirm the work activity is compliant
  • 1.3 Identify environmental issues and potential hazards, and assess and address risks within scope of own role and according to workplace procedures
  • 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment required for work activities
  • 1.5 Select plant, tools and equipment required for tasks, check for faults, and report or rectify in scope of own role and check for faults within scope of own role
  • 1.6 Confirm and comply with environmental protection, safety and traffic management signage requirements
  • 1.7 Obtain and interpret emergency procedures and identify steps required in case of fire, accident and other emergencies
2. Set up tanker for operation
  • 2.1 Carry out pre-operational checks on bitumen tanker
  • 2.2 Fill ancillary tanks and confirm adequate materials are available to perform tanker operations
  • 2.3 Check tanks to prevent contamination
  • 2.4 Obtain load details, including amount of any additives
3. Load tanker
  • 3.1 Carry out pre-start checks and start-up procedures
  • 3.2 Drive and operate tanker according to job requirements
  • 3.3 Check previous load details for compatibility
  • 3.4 Load tank with prescribed amount of material
  • 3.5 Add and mix additives to specifications
  • 3.6 Check material temperature and confirm compliance with manufacturer specifications
  • 3.7 Measure, calculate and record material quantities and additives
  • 3.8 Heat materials in accordance with manufacturer/supplier instructions
4. Transfer materials
  • 4.1 Set up transfer site according to job requirements
  • 4.2 Confirm transfer procedures with depot supervisor or sprayer driver
  • 4.3 Transfer materials according to job requirements
  • 4.4 Record details of transferred materials according to workplace procedures
5. Empty tanker and carry out operator maintenance
  • 5.1 Empty tank into storage or waste and clean tank interior
  • 5.2 Prepare machine for maintenance
  • 5.3 Conduct inspection and fault finding
  • 5.4 Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks according to workplace procedures
  • 5.5 Process written maintenance records according to workplace procedures
6. Carry out housekeeping activities
  • 6.1 Clear work area and dispose of and recycle materials as required according to workplace procedures and environmental requirements
  • 6.2 Clean, check, perform maintenance on in scope of own role, and store plant, tools and equipment
