Description
This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to assist in the construction and maintenance of multi-product non-permanent bulk fuel installations within a Defence operational environment.It includes preparing and assisting in constructing and maintaining field bulk fuel installations.This unit applies to persons working as petroleum operators in Defence but is applicable to any individual in this field of work.The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out including the current Australian Dangerous Goods Code. Organisational policies and procedures must be consulted and adhered to.Persons undertaking this unit work under supervision, and perform routine tasks in a range of familiar and unfamiliar contexts.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Prepare for construction
  • 1.1 Obtain and confirm installation instructions and schematic diagrams with relevant personnel
  • 1.2 Select and inspect equipment for serviceability prior to construction in accordance with manufacturer specifications and operational procedures
  • 1.3 Set up safety equipment prior to construction in accordance with operational procedures
  • 1.4 Apply work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) requirements and recognised safety precautions in accordance with operational procedures
  • 1.5 Identify and apply environmentally sustainable work practices as required, in accordance with operational procedures
2 Construct field bulk fuel installations
  • 2.1 Position storage tanks in accordance with schematic diagrams and relevant industry code/s
  • 2.2 Construct manifold system to meet task requirements
  • 2.3 Respond to unplanned problems with manifold construction in accordance with operational procedures and emergency response plan, in a manner that minimises risk to personnel and equipment
  • 2.4 Pressure test and commission installation in accordance with operational directions and procedures
  • 2.5 Return and restow construction equipment, and refurbish site in preparation for bulk fuel delivery
3 Maintain field bulk fuel installations
  • 3.1 Maintain equipment to provide bulk fuel supplies in accordance with manufacturer specifications
  • 3.2 Perform fuel site housekeeping to maintain a safe and operational installation
  • 3.3 Measure bulk fuel storage tank levels and record results
  • 3.4 Test fuel for contamination, record results and quarantine as required, in accordance operational procedures
