Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop and apply a range of stagecraft skills during performances.The unit applies to those who are musicians and performers in all genres, whose image and reputation rely on the way they approach performances and engage with audiences, and not just their ability to play an instrument or sing. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Develop stagecraft skills
- 1.1 Identify stage experience opportunities for developing stagecraft skills in chosen area of music performance in consultation with required personnel
- 1.2 Discuss and record personal skill development goals with required personnel
- 1.3 Identify own strengths and weaknesses and determine strategies for developing stagecraft skills in line with personal goals
- 1.4 Plan stage image and use of technology in performance
- 1.5 Use rehearsals, stage opportunities and own practice time to develop stagecraft techniques according to safe work practices
2. Apply stagecraft skills
- 2.1 Perform mental and physical warm-up and warm-down exercises according to safe work practices
- 2.2 Present performance and demonstrate confidence according to planned stage image
- 2.3 Communicate with audience during performance and use gestures, mannerisms and facial expressions suited to performance and stage requirements
- 2.4 Maintain performance energy and flexibility, using spontaneous and rehearsed stage movements suited to performance space and according to performance requirements
- 2.5 Respond appropriately to unexpected contingencies in performance venue and maintain flow and integrity of performance
- 2.6 Communicate and engage with audiences before, between and after performance
- 2.7 Acknowledge applause in manner that is suited to context and sensitive to other performers
3. Evaluate stagecraft skill development
- 3.1 Evaluate own stagecraft during performance and identify areas for improvement in line with personal performance goals and career aspirations
- 3.2 Discuss personal development areas with required personnel and determine strategies from feedback to improve future performance
- 3.3 Seek and use required publications, work, workshops and study opportunities in specific aspects of stagecraft
