Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to seal concrete pavements in civil construction, including selecting and using hand and power tools and sealing concrete pavements using sealer material and backer rods.It applies to those working in operational roles. They generally work under minimal supervision to undertake a broad range of tasks in varied work contexts, using some discretion and judgement in selecting equipment, services or contingency measures.Licensing, legislative and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories, and industry sectors. Users must check requirements with relevant body before applying the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare to seal concrete pavements
- 1.1 Obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
- 1.2 Access, interpret and apply documentation required to seal concrete pavements and confirm work activity is compliant
- 1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures
- 1.4 Select and wear personal protective equipment according to site requirements
- 1.5 Identify, obtain, confirm and implement signage requirements
- 1.6 Select tools and equipment required to carry out tasks and check for faults
2. Seal concrete pavements using hand tools
- 2.1 Clamp or fix materials in position according to job requirement
- 2.2 Use hand tools according to manufacturer specifications and job and site requirements
- 2.3 Store hand tools according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements when not in use
- 2.4 Monitor movements and hazards, identify and communicate changes to work environment according to site requirements
3. Seal concrete pavements using power tools
- 3.1 Check power leads and hoses according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
- 3.2 Clear route for placement of leads and hoses according job and site requirements
- 3.3 Run electrical power leads to power supply according to site requirements
- 3.4 Connect electric power leads to power board or direct to power tool according to job and site requirements
- 3.5 Run air hoses to compressed air supply and cover potential trip hazards according to site requirements
- 3.6 Connect hose to power tool and air supply according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
- 3.7 Use power tools according to manufacturer specifications and job and site requirements and store as required when not in use
- 3.8 Clean out and prepare for joint sealing according site requirements
- 3.9 Complete joint sealing records according to site requirements
4. Conduct clean-up activities
- 4.1 Clear work area and dispose of, reuse or recycle materials according to site requirements
- 4.2 Clean, check, maintain and store machinery, tools and equipment according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
