Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to install, maintain and repair hydrants.It includes conducting a risk assessment, isolating and testing hydrant repairs. It also includes ensuring replacement hydrant is in working order and worksite is restored.This unit applies to those working as field staff with specific responsibility for ensuring the work related to hydrants is completed in compliance with all relevant organisational and statutory requirements. Those undertaking this unit work independently under appropriate supervision while performing routine tasks, and ensuring minimum damage to the environment, in a familiar context.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Prepare for work
  • 1.1 Identify utility assets or services by contacting relevant authorities
  • 1.2 Present identification and notify customers of works and potential supply interruptions
  • 1.3 Conduct risk assessment of worksite and work and select appropriate personal protective equipment according to workplace procedures
  • 1.4 Conduct earth leakage risk assessment according to workplace procedures
  • 1.5 Determine work requirements from specifications and instructions
  • 1.6 Test hydrant to determine if replacement or repair of hydrant is required and record results
  • 1.7 Identify, check and prepare materials, equipment and resources required for work
  • 1.8 Select and install appropriate earth leakage equipment according to workplace procedures
2 Conduct installation, maintenance and refurbishment
  • 2.1 Implement isolation of water system according to workplace procedures
  • 2.2 Implement controls in relation to safety, environment, and isolating the worksite according to workplace procedures
  • 2.3 Excavate worksite to gain access to hydrant for replacement or repair according to workplace procedures
  • 2.4 Install new hydrant or complete repairs to existing hydrant according to workplace procedures
  • 2.5 Remove earth leakage equipment according to workplace procedures
3 Finalise work
  • 3.1 Remove isolations according to workplace procedures
  • 3.2 Retest hydrant and record results
  • 3.3 Check, maintain and store equipment, tools and materials according to workplace procedures
  • 3.4 Restore worksite, complete and submit workplace records
