Description
This unit describes the skills required to conduct the installation, maintenance and repair of hydrants.This unit applies to those working as field staff with specific responsibility for ensuring the work related to hydrants is completed in compliance with all relevant organisational and statutory requirements. The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out. Organisational policies and procedures must be consulted and adhered to.Those undertaking this unit work independently under indirect supervision while performing routine tasks, ensuring minimum damage to the environment, in a familiar context.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for work
  • 1.1 Obtain permits, isolation plans and contact Dial Before You Dig.
  • 1.2 Identify yourself to customers and ensure customers have been notified of works and potential supply interruptions.
  • 1.3 Conduct risk assessment of worksite and work.
  • 1.4 Determine work requirements from specifications or instructions.
  • 1.5 Test hydrant to determine the work required and record results.
  • 1.6 Organise traffic management personnel.
  • 1.7 Check all relevant licences from all personnel.
  • 1.8 Identify, check and prepare materials, equipment and resources required.
2. Conduct installation, maintenance and refurbishment
  • 2.1 Implement isolations.
  • 2.2 Implement controls in relation to safety, environment, and barricading the work site.
  • 2.3 Excavate and select appropriate equipment.
  • 2.4 Complete maintenance repairs.
3. Finalise work
  • 3.1 Remove isolations.
  • 3.2 Retest hydrant and record results.
  • 3.3 Maintain and store tools as per workplace procedures and manufacturer specifications.
  • 3.4 Restore the worksite and complete and submit workplace records.
