Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to build on basic technical skills in a chosen area of music specialisation.The unit applies to those who perform as instrumentalists or vocalists and need to develop routines for tuning and caring for instruments or their voice. They may be developing skills on either a first or second instrument.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to use instrument or voice
- 1.1 Care for, move and store instruments and accessories as required using required methods and cleaning products
- 1.2 Set up and warm up instrument or voice according to work health and safety (WHS) principles
- 1.3 Tune instrument to required standard and in line with tuning conventions if required
2. Use practice sessions to extend technical skills
- 2.1 Listen to work of professional musicians and set own technical skill goals
- 2.2 Plan and implement personal practice time according to technical skill goals
- 2.3 Select repertoire to be practised in consultation with required personnel
- 2.4 Develop and extend control over physical characteristics, range and scope of instrument or voice and apply to practice
- 2.5 Monitor and adjust intonation, harmonies, tone colour and rhythm as required
- 2.6 Play or sing technical exercises and studies suited to chosen instrument or voice and selected repertoire, as advised by required personnel
- 2.7 Seek feedback from required personnel on use of technical skills during practice sessions and incorporate as required
3. Play or sing practice pieces
- 3.1 Demonstrate correct posture and techniques in line with WHS principles
- 3.2 Play or sing practice pieces from selected repertoire, confirming that technical requirements are met
- 3.3 Demonstrate following required tempi and musical markings as required
- 3.4 Demonstrate sound control, intonation, and variation in sound and tone by listening and adjusting techniques as required
4. Evaluate own technical skills
- 4.1 Evaluate own practice against identified performance goals
- 4.2 Seek and integrate feedback from others with own observations and note areas for future skill development
