Description
This qualification reflects the role of individuals working in a range of technical production jobs in creative arts industry environments. It applies to work in lighting and sound, music industry, entertainment customer service, entertainment technical operations, entertainment administration, staging, wardrobe, scenery and set construction, broadcasting production, live production and entertainment technical operations work environments.
They apply solutions to a defined range of unpredictable problems, and analyse and evaluate information from a variety of sources. They may provide leadership and guidance to others and have limited responsibility for the output of others.
The job roles that relate to this qualification may include Pyrotechnician, Head Fly Operator, Fly Operator, Sound Recordist, Community Theatre Centre Worker, Wardrobe Technician, Costume Maker, Sound Technician, Set Maker, Lighting, Audio and Staging Worker, Assistant Stage Manager, Audiovisual Technician, Community Theatre Production Worker, Front of House Worker, Venue Technician, Lighting Technician and Operator, Props Maker, Model Maker, Scenic Artist, Audio Operator, Video Operator, Workshop Technician, Staging Team Leader, Production Coordinator and Show Control Technician. It also provides a pathway to other roles in similar work environments.
Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification considerations
Electrical work
In some States and Territories of Australia a restricted electrical licence is required. Restricted electrical licences allow a person to carry out electrical work incidental to a trade. Incidental work may include fault-finding on equipment or changing like for like equipment by disconnecting and reconnecting the fixed wiring. It does not include any other changes to the fixed wiring.
National Standard for Licensing Persons Performing High Risk Work
The National Standard for Licensing Persons Performing High Risk Work applies to persons performing dogging and rigging work. Completion of the following units is required for certification at either basic, intermediate or advanced levels:
CPCCLDG3001 Licence to perform dogging
CPCCLRG3001 Licence to perform rigging basic level
CPCCLRG3002 Licence to perform rigging intermediate level
CPCCLRG4001 Licence to perform rigging advanced level.
National Code of Practice for Induction for Construction Work
Sets and staging for some performances or events may fall within the definition of construction work. If so, people entering the construction site are required to complete the general induction training program specified by the National Code of Practice for Induction Training for Construction Work (Australian Safety Compensation Council, May 2007). Achievement of the unit 'CPCCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry' from the Construction, Plumbing and Services Training Package fulfils this requirement.
Pyrotechnics
In some States and Territories of Australia a licence is required to allow a person to plan and operate a fireworks display.
Users are advised to check with the relevant licensing authority for requirements.
Units of competency in qualification
Some individual units of competency may have their own licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements. Users must check individual units of competency for licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements relevant to that unit.

Packaging Rules
Total number of units = Sixteen (16)- four (4) core units plus
- twelve (12) elective units, of which:
- one (1) must be from Group A
- nine (9) must be from the electives listed below, with no more than three (3) from Group C
- two (2) may be from the remaining electives in Group A, B and/or D, or any currently endorsed training package qualification or accredited course.
Elective units must be relevant to the work environment and the qualification, maintain the overall integrity of the AQF alignment, not duplicate the outcome of another unit chosen for the qualification, and contribute to a valid industry-supported vocational outcome.
Where relevant, the choice of elective units set out in the packaging rules above can serve to provide the qualification with one of the following specialisations. The rules to achieve a specialisation are detailed at qualification end.

Packaging rules to achieve a specialisation
Sound
- five (5) Group B electives must be selected, and must include CUASOU421 Mix audio for live productions, CUASOU412 Manage audio input sources, and CUASOU413 Manage audio system control networks.
Vision
- five (5) Group B electives must be selected, and must include CUAVSS312 Operate vision systems and CUAVSS401 Operate complex vision systems.
Costume
- five (5) Group B electives must be selected, and must include CUACOS411 Make costumes for dance and physical theatre, CUACOS412 Make costume accessories, and CUACOS413 Develop expertise in costume component construction.
Lighting
- five (5) Group B electives must be selected, and must include CUALGT411 Operate complex lighting, CUALGT412 Implement lighting designs, and CUALGT413 Set up and operate lighting cues and effects.
Scenery and Props
- five (5) Group B electives must be selected, and must include CUAPRP411 Coordinate props, CUAPRP412 Use casting and moulding techniques to make props, CUAPRP413 Make props using mixed media, and CUASCE411 Create special effects for scenic art.
Live Production Management
- five (5) Group B electives must be selected, and must include CUAPPM432 Coordinate production operations, CUAPPM433 Coordinate touring arrangements, CUAPPM431 Compile production schedules.
Stage Management
- five (5) Group B electives must be selected, and must include CUASMT412 Assist in stage managing rehearsals and CUASMT413 Develop and implement production work plans.
Staging
- five (5) Group B electives must be selected, and must include RIIWHS204E Work safely at heights, CUASTA412 Install and uninstall specialist staging equipment, and CUASTA413 Operate flying systems.

Entry Requirements
Individuals must provide evidence of their skills in live production and technical services and the ability to:
produce a body of work demonstrating the ability to respond effectively to workplace requirements associated with live production and technical services in line with current industry standards
apply a basic knowledge of trends and traditions in at least one area of technical production.
Skills and knowledge may have been acquired through experience or formal study.
